Hobbies

Different times bring along different attitudes towards life, the universe, and everything. Yet, there is one constant in my life: the strong will to keep in good shape, not to become lazy, foul, and fat.
From early youth I was always deep into sports playing football, handball, basketball, and volleyball. When I got my first paycheck from my military service, I bought a racing bike. In the years to follow I put at least 3.000 km p.a. on its clock. When I started university, I got into (ice) hockey, fitness training, and jogging. I stayed with football for sure.
To keep mind and soul fit as well, I read a lot. I am interested in both fact and fiction. In the mid 80s I got my first computer, a C-64. Using this incredible machine for playing games is a dull way to spend one’s time, so I started to write programs and, finally, wrote games myself.

In my time at a Braunschweig student’s hostel my mates and I started to link our computers at a time when usually computers were not interconnected. Our first small network grew fast and we hooked up to the internet before even the industry recognized the www’s commercial potential. Today, every room in the hostel has a high speed connection to the university’s main computer center, which is originally based on our endeavor.
Recognizing that software from Redmond may do its job, but also gives rise to both less freedom of choice and more susceptibility to hacker attacks, I got into LINUX. Today, my home computer network (including file and application servers, a couple of workplaces, a web server, a printing server, etc.) is based on the free and stable operating system.

Novadays, of cause, my son is my favourite hobby...
